Copper Patina

Why does copper become patinated?

This unique finish is the result of copper reaction to the atmospheric condition. Patina protects the metal and gives it an organic “look”.
All copper surfaces exposed to the atmosphere become patinated over time. It is a natural phenomenon and a desired one as it protects against the corrosion. Forming of patina is a complex, uncontrolled and a long process.

Patina is formed from copper salts, and its colour depends on compounds found in the open air and in rainwater– different in different regions (e.g., salts near the sea or pollution in big cities). Copper oxidises straight away when in contact with the weather.

Is starts being bright orange-red. Very quickly, after few weeks or months becomes dark brown and dull. After a long time, colour changes to green-blue, but the process will depend on the surface angle – on a vertical wall it may never change from chocolate brown to green, but it will on the roof. The more air pollution the quicker the process. It may take up to 30 years to develop the patina where there is no pollution.
